We recently returned from a quick weekend in Portland, where we’re constantly amazed at the mindfulness and sophistication in the built environment. The level of multi-family and mixed-use urban housing is extraordinary in Portland -how is Portland getting developers to step it up and fund such high quality, design-forward projects? We’ve got crazy respect for the city of roses and we had a smashing time running around the city checking out new venues. We just returned from Portland Oregon where team BUILD tracked down some new editions of modern design and culture for The Modern List. Not only is Portland generating good ideas, but they’re getting things accomplished. While most cities are yapping on about urban renewal and sustainability, while they’re spending ridiculous amounts of time and energy on community planning groups and high-end digital renderings, Portland is just making it happen. We turn our backs for 5 minutes and Portland conjures up a whole new coolness. Recently, we re-familiarized ourselves with the Land of Ports and have returned to saturate the BUILDblog with a handful of pleasant surprises. Not only is good design ubiquitous in Portland, but there’s a new aesthetic coming into being. It’s modern and gritty; it re-uses the timeless elements from the past and combines them with innovations of the present. It’s designed and unique but not self-conscious or exclusive. The recent remodel by Atelier Ace (Ace Hotel’s design studio) turned the previous Clyde hotel into bohemian aesthetic that makes modern use of found objects. The individual rooms do a nice job of displaying the work of many northwest artists.
