Skylab, Portland

We often feel like we’re building with sticks and stones here in the Pacific Northwest. Refined interiors, sophisticated surfaces and attention to light are difficult to find in the public realm. Since 1999 the architect, builder, and developer Jeff Kovel has been providing an oasis to the commercial drab through the work of Skylab, his Portland based firm. Skylab’s residential work is clever, fresh and filled with light. The restaurant and lounge interiors are dark, sensuous and inviting. Moving through the spaces and experiencing the illuminations and textures is an architectural feast – the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland is straight out of a David Lynch film. To properly endure the long dim northwest winter we prescribe staying for a martini or two and taking in the warm glow and rich textures of a Skylab interior.
