It’s been a few years since we’ve visited the high altitude urbanism going on in The Centennial State. On a recent visit last month, it had become clear that with each passing year Denver is becoming known as more than a city within striking distance of a high altitude playground. The mountains will always be an integral part of the culture and growth of this city, but in the past year alone, Denver has (and by the looks of it will continue to) put itself on the art, culture, culinary, and architectural maps. So when you book your next ski trip to Vail, it’ll be worth spending some time exploring the ever-changing Mile High City.

As architects of the current time, people expect us to have an awareness of what is going on in the design world. It’s important to be up on current design developments and it’s necessary to have a working knowledge of the prominent examples of modernism. We find NYC to be the culture hub of the design world; it is, arguably, the most important city in the world for modern design and culture. And while we’re 2,800 miles away here in Seattle, we find it imperative to get our feet on Manhattan pavement a couple of times each year. As an architectural laboratory and one of the greatest social experiments ever conducted on earth, NYC is one of the best places for the design-minded to observe, research, and learn. We did just that on our recent trip earlier this summer; subsequently we’ve got a suitcase full of new, cool design to share with you. Many, many more on the Modern List.

Twice a year we head to Manhattan to catch up on all things design. We like being well prepared for our travels and we’re currently deep in the trenches of our Manhattan research. Part of our homework involves following trusted publications, tracking design blogs and talking to our favorite NYC field correspondents. Although we’re always on the lookout for new venues, exhibits and events, we always visit some older favorites as well. These favorites are so important to the modern culture of Manhattan that we decided to round them up into a tidy little post. If you’re design-minded, you’d be foolish to miss these 25.

We just brushed up on the latest in modern culture from our very own backyard and we’ve got a ton of cool new (and not so new) Seattle venues to get on your radar. If you’re a local, it’s a perfect time to get a few of these spots on your holiday to-do list, as these warm, modern interiors are the perfect remedy for the long, dark Pacific Northwest winter ahead. And if you’re traveling here, these coolio establishments will give you an insiders experience of the rainy city (away from the touristimos). Huge props go out to Seattle’s amazing foodie blogs and our friends on Twitter for keeping us well informed on all things culinary and well designed. In the event that this this list doesn’t satiate your appetite for modern culture, there’s plenty more on The Modern List Seattle.

Recently we did some traveling up north; to Vancouver Island, then up through the inside passage to Alaska. While the natural wonders of this part of the world are well known and well documented, we had very few expectations in terms of the architecture and urban design. We were thrilled to reach Anchorage and find handsome design, ambitious ideas and forward thinking construction. Admittedly, we didn’t think Alaska would be pushing the architectural envelope; however we found several project types that rival, if not beat, most of the architecture here in the northwest. Here’s our top 5, hit that comments button if you’ve got others.

Last week we played hooky and ran off to southern Florida to re-familiarize ourselves with that glowing yellow orb in the sky. We were curious to experience the growing design culture in Miami and we also checked out the Florida Keys. Since then, we’ve recovered from the copious amounts of rum, we’ve sorted our notes and we’re ready to release the scoop for the design conscious, enjoy.

We just returned from the breathtaking state of Colorado where we’re working on a new project. The trip out allowed us to do a bit of traveling around, and to put it simply – we were blown away at the cool architecture, dramatic mountain ranges and fall colors. With a tremendous amount of help from friends, we scouted out some well-designed, modern work that we think you’ll enjoy getting your eyes on:
