Team BUILD is in New York City for fashion week and there’s some cool events going on that are worth getting on your radar. First a couple of easy ways to keep tabs on us as we’re running around the big city:
If you’re not already part of our twitter feed, you can hop on board here. We’ll be keeping a tab on gorgeous design in NYC with the #NYFW hashtag (New York Fashion Week).
While we’re jumping from one venue to the next we’ll be checking in via Foursquare – if you’re interested in NYC hotspots link up to us and use slick tools like Weeplaces to graphically map us.
We’ll be vetting-out and updating our ever expanding Modern List Manhattan. As always, we look forward to any modern recommendations you might have -so hit that comments button and get them on our radar.
Here’s a few new spots to wet your palette: Tartinery, Torrisi Italian Specialties, and The Raines Law Room

On our recent Manhattan trip we were struck by the texture and grittiness of the city, more so than previous trips. Maybe it’s because New York finally got a real coffee shop and subsequently our senses were running on all cylinders. Maybe it’s due to a couple of key exhibits in town at the moment. Or maybe texture is back in. Who knows, but we couldn’t keep our iPhone cameras in our pockets and for today’s post we’ve compiled the BUILDblog Urban Texture Portfolio.

Now that spring is officially in the air, there’s a few items on our to do list; get the cafe chairs back on the deck, stock up on Compari and… head to Manhattan. Yup, it’s time for us temperate climate North-Westerners to swoop in and take advantage of the low humidity and sunshine. A big thanks to all the New Yorkers that did the heavy lifting by braving another brutal east-coast winter and holding down the city. Team BUILD just returned from a quick trip where we tracked down the latest in modern architecture, design, art, food and culture. There’s some great finds that we think you’ll enjoy and many more on The Modern List Manhattan.
DINNER
While there’s a lot more design-grit popping up in Manhattan’s dinner scene (rough-sawn wood, raw concrete, etc) there’s a few slick interiors as well. We were relieved to find most of our favorite spots still keeping their heads above water and some new venues well on their way to becoming faves.

We just returned from Manhattan where we dove headfirst into the latest modern architecture, design, art, food and culture. It’s a great time for a trip to NYC because even the design hotels are offering outstanding rates. We got a screamin deal at the Gramercy Park Hotel this time – an establishment so exclusive that they usually don’t even let rubbish like us into the bar. Boutique restaurants were hosting recession specials and happy-hours were plentiful. Below are the spots that we recommend checking out; we must have missed dozens of cool, new, modern places – so hit that comments button and give us the scoop. As per usual – these will be added to The Modern List where you can find many more.

Dear MOMA,
We are members, supporters and regulars of your extraordinary museum. We link to you on our websites, name-drop you at social gatherings, sip overpriced drinks in your lounge, and think the eight-hundred-and-fifty-eight million dollar remodel was worth every penny. You are the foremost museum of modern art in the world and we will continue to spend our hard earned money to enter through that sleek white atrium and proceed up the stairs to modern enlightenment.

BUILD just returned from New York City where we field tested the new and improved Modern List Manhattan. The database of all things modern is iPhone friendly now and each entry links directly to Google Maps – eliminating the need for physical maps. Supplement the Modern List with a credit-card size subway map (found at Barnes & Noble) and you’ve got everything you need for urban adventure. We’ve got a few tweaks to make here and there (like adding a digital subway map) but overall it’s a great way to see a lot of city with a minimum amount of travel ‘stuff’. There are tons of new entries for you modernists out there (if you can put up with our crappy photos), and many more on The Modern List:

In spirit of heading to Manhattan, today’s blog features some sexy diagramming, mapping and visual measures from New York City. These diagrams are stimulating and effective because every graphic move on the paper (or screen) has a meaning; the color, dimension, position, and position relative to other graphics are all important. In addition to all the data, they are composed with craft and intentionality. Let us know what you’ve found out there…
New York Times: In the Shadow of Foreclosures
Both color and height indicate a different measure of foreclosures and the perspective view makes it all the more dramatic. The sharp visual makes a complicated collection of statistics comprehensible and allows for quick visual comparisons.

Although we haven’t spent much time in Manhattan lately (and won’t until the heat gets turned back on) there is quite a bit of work to catch up on in the big city. We were sorry to see a couple of great modern spaces close shop (Restaurant 66, Jewel Bako Makimono, Ini Ani Coffee Shop) but a whole new crop of rocket-hot, modern interiors and exteriors have emerged. Here’s a quick primer, look for updates to The Modern List Manhattan in the near future.
