#NYFW

Team BUILD is in New York City for fashion week and there’s some cool events going on that are worth getting on your radar. First a couple of easy ways to keep tabs on us as we’re running around the big city:

If you’re not already part of our twitter feed, you can hop on board here. We’ll be keeping a tab on gorgeous design in NYC with the #NYFW hashtag (New York Fashion Week).

While we’re jumping from one venue to the next we’ll be checking in via Foursquare – if you’re interested in NYC hotspots link up to us and use slick tools like Weeplaces to graphically map us.

We’ll be vetting-out and updating our ever expanding Modern List Manhattan. As always, we look forward to any modern recommendations you might have -so hit that comments button and get them on our radar.

Here’s a few new spots to wet your palette: Tartinery, Torrisi Italian Specialties,  and The Raines Law Room

The savvy folks at Brizo are responsible for bringing BUILD out to NYC, and you’ll be hearing from us about some cool events Brizo is putting on involving good design, new ideas and cross-pollination – 3 of our faves.

Among the big ticket items on the agenda in NYC is meeting up with wunderkind fashion designer Jason Wu. At 27 he’s made quite a name for himself in the fashion world after the First Lady wore the Jason Wu label at Obama’s inauguration. Since then Wu has partnered with Brizo on design and we’ll be sitting courtside (or runway-side as it may be) at Wu’s show.

We’ll also be joining Brizo for a cocktail party at the Showtime House where several condominiums have been cleverly outfitted to replicate your favorite shows like Weeds, Dexter and Californication to name a few. Should be a good time and, being a nuts-and-bolts operation,  we’ll be reporting back with some good details.

The Cooper Hewitt is presenting the National Design Triennial which focuses on the most innovative designs at the center of contemporary culture. In this fourth exhibition in the series, the National Design Triennial will explore the work of designers addressing human and environmental problems -sign us up!

…and we’ll be hitting up the usual suspects like MOMA and the Center for Architecture.

Cheers from team BUILD and virtual martinis all around.

Urban TEXTURES: San Francisco

Lately on our travels we’ve been putting together collections of textures that jump out at us. It gets us thinking a little differently as we explore cities and places and it makes us more deliberate about where we go, what we do, and what we take photos of. On a recent trip to San Francisco we pointed our iPhones at some textures that communicated significant qualities about the place, time and conditions.

The Modern List San Francisco

We just returned from San Francisco where we caught up with some talented friends from our study abroad days in Denmark; we also scoped out some modern venues that are fresh on the radar. When traveling, we believe that there’s no excuse for a mediocre experience; every meal you eat, gallery you see and martini that you tip back should be an extraordinary experience, or at the very least, new and different. We started THE MODERN LIST several years ago to record all of these places in 5 different cities. If you like what you’re seeing you can check out TML San Francisco for more, and as always, let us know what we missed.

Rural TEXTURES: Alaska

We had so much fun with the last textures post that on a recent trip to Alaska and Vancouver Island we couldn’t stop thinking about how the texture of a place should be unique and special. Texture should tell you something about the people, the place, the weather… and Alaska didn’t let us down. In addition to taking in some visual eye candy – consider how your favorite places have textures all their own.

Urban TEXTURES: Manhattan

On our recent Manhattan trip we were struck by the texture and grittiness of the city, more so than previous trips. Maybe it’s because New York finally got a real coffee shop and subsequently our senses were running on all cylinders. Maybe it’s due to a couple of key exhibits in town at the moment. Or maybe texture is back in. Who knows, but we couldn’t keep our iPhone cameras in our pockets and for today’s post we’ve compiled the BUILDblog Urban Texture Portfolio.

Elderly Housing Design in Europe

The differences between elderly housing here in America compared with elderly housing in Europe has always been alarming to us. The elderly housing typical of American design seems marked by large scale mega-complexes intended to house the maximum amount of people with the minimum amount of effort. The housing is usually pushed out of sight (and out of mind) and the work lacks inspiration, composition and identity. We’ll eventually pay the price for such near-sighted design when the majority of us end up spending the tail-end of our lives  in these overlooked, dreary facilities.

In stark contrast, the work in Europe tends toward a human scale and seems to evoke a sense of community.  These projects are situated in gorgeous settings with fantastic views; the design seems deliberate and thought-out by good architects.  It’s as if the Europeans aim to offer respect and appreciation to those individuals who paved the way before them.  How novel.

But enough of our ranting. Today we’re going to give you the scoop on some truly phenomenal elderly housing projects. As always, let us know what we missed out there.

The Modern List Miami & the Keys

Last week we played hooky and ran off to southern Florida to re-familiarize ourselves with that glowing yellow orb in the sky. We were curious to experience the growing design culture in Miami and we also checked out the Florida Keys. Since then, we’ve recovered from the copious amounts of rum, we’ve sorted our notes and we’re ready to release the scoop for the design conscious, enjoy.

The Modern List Colorado

TML Colorado Header

We just returned from the breathtaking state of Colorado where we’re working on a new project.  The trip out allowed us to do a bit of traveling around, and to put it simply – we were blown away at the cool architecture, dramatic mountain ranges and fall colors.  With a tremendous amount of help from friends, we scouted out some well-designed, modern work that we think you’ll enjoy getting your eyes on:
