The Modern List Manhattan

Now that spring is officially in the air, there’s a few items on our to do list; get the cafe chairs back on the deck,  stock up on Compari and… head to Manhattan. Yup, it’s time for us temperate climate North-Westerners to swoop in and take advantage of the low humidity and sunshine. A big thanks to all the New Yorkers that did the heavy lifting by braving another brutal east-coast winter and holding down the city. Team BUILD just returned from a quick trip where we tracked down the latest in modern architecture, design, art, food and culture. There’s some great finds that we think you’ll enjoy and many more on The Modern List Manhattan.

DINNER
While there’s a lot more design-grit popping up in Manhattan’s dinner scene (rough-sawn wood, raw concrete, etc) there’s a few slick interiors as well. We were relieved to find most of our favorite spots still keeping their heads above water and some new venues well on their way to becoming faves.

The Modern List: Portland leads the way

We just returned from Portland Oregon where team BUILD tracked down some new editions of modern design and culture for The Modern List. Not only is Portland generating good ideas, but they’re getting things accomplished. While most cities are yapping on about urban renewal and sustainability, while they’re spending ridiculous amounts of time and energy on community planning groups and high-end digital renderings, Portland is just making it happen. Two thumbs up and a big gold star from the BUILDblog; check out our recommendations below and many, many more on The Modern List.

The Modern List Miami & the Keys

Last week we played hooky and ran off to southern Florida to re-familiarize ourselves with that glowing yellow orb in the sky. We were curious to experience the growing design culture in Miami and we also checked out the Florida Keys. Since then, we’ve recovered from the copious amounts of rum, we’ve sorted our notes and we’re ready to release the scoop for the design conscious, enjoy.

Recently team BUILD spent some time in the windy city for our Tree House project that’s moving around the nation.  We’ve since compiled our homework and we’ve got a tight list of cool spots to check out in Chicago.  Today’s post highlights some favorites (both new and old); the full roster has been compiled in an easy to reference PDF which can be downloaded here.    Tell us what you like, where we missed the mark or what’s on your list.

The Modern List Colorado

TML Colorado Header

We just returned from the breathtaking state of Colorado where we’re working on a new project.  The trip out allowed us to do a bit of traveling around, and to put it simply – we were blown away at the cool architecture, dramatic mountain ranges and fall colors.  With a tremendous amount of help from friends, we scouted out some well-designed, modern work that we think you’ll enjoy getting your eyes on:

Better Know a Neighborhood – Magnolia, Seattle

illustrator_tb_vertical.ai

illustrator_tb_vertical.ai

Magnolia is a utopia for fans of mid-century modern architecture and double-level glass boxes with low, sheltering A-frame roofs are ubiquitous on its slopes.  The structures are modest and practical, all while taking advantage of the sweeping city, sound and mountain views.

The Modern List: Portland ups the ante

tml-portland-map

We turn our backs for 5 minutes and Portland conjures up a whole new coolness.  Recently, we re-familiarized ourselves with the Land of Ports and have returned to saturate the BUILDblog with a handful of pleasant surprises.  Not only is good design ubiquitous in Portland, but there’s a new aesthetic coming into being.  It’s modern and gritty; it re-uses the timeless elements from the past and combines them with innovations of the present.  It’s designed and unique but not self-conscious or exclusive.  Check these joints out and let us know what we missed.  Many more on The Modern List Portland.

HOTELS
Ace Hotel, 1022 SW Stark Str, 503.228.2277
The recent remodel by Atelier Ace (Ace Hotel’s design studio) turned the previous Clyde hotel into bohemian aesthetic that makes modern use of found objects.  The individual rooms do a nice job of displaying the work of many northwest artists.

The Modern List Manhattan

We just returned from Manhattan where we dove headfirst into the latest modern architecture, design, art, food and culture.  It’s a great time for a trip to NYC because even the design hotels are offering outstanding rates.  We got a screamin deal at the Gramercy Park Hotel this time – an establishment so exclusive that they usually don’t even let rubbish like us into the bar.  Boutique restaurants were hosting recession specials and happy-hours were plentiful.  Below are the spots that we recommend checking out; we must have missed dozens of cool, new, modern places – so hit that comments button and give us the scoop.  As per usual – these will be added to The Modern List where you can find many more.

The Modern List Seattle

illustrator_tb_vertical.ai

In addition to a few recent projects here in Seattle, we’ve noticed that there are some great examples of architecture that have been around for decades and should be represented. Today’s post should bring you up to speed with the current work as well as some staples of Seattle design that we should all be familiar with. Many more on The Modern List Seattle… and as always, let us know what we missed.

Recently, the City of Seattle authorized the painting of repetitive geometrical patterns to the underside of some of the more oppressive I-5 underpasses. We got our own up here in Ravenna, and we have to admit that it makes the pedestrian experience much more pleasant. Coincidence that we named this location as one of the top candidates to turn into a legal graffiti park in an earlier post?
