The BUILD Case Study House is nearing completion and we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be throwing the doors open and hosting an open house next week. Not only will we be celebrating the completion of this unique home, but we’ll also be showcasing advances in cabinet design (more on that later). It’ll be the perfect opportunity to kick the tires on the real thing.

Those who have been tracking progress on the project know that our aim from the start was to design and build a modern home for a family of four in the city at a reasonable cost. We’ve also set out to use a marginalized building lot as well as incorporate other elements that are becoming more desired by our community, such as a ground floor suite that could comfortably house aging family members. We’re in the home stretch towards this goal, with a handful of items wrapping up at the construction site.

Steel Handrails & Guardrails
Having an in-house steel shop has its benefits. The open tread connections and railings at the main staircase were fabricated on site and went in a few weeks ago. The exterior deck guardrails are returning from the galvanizer and will be installed in the next couple of days.

Cabinet Package
Cabinet boxes and uppers have been installed and made ready for appliance install, thanks to the cabinet shop.

Siding
Gray-stained cedar and gray-painted hardie-boad siding complement the surrounding landscape and provide a warm backdrop for the life of the family.

Surfaces
Tile flooring installed, and looking sharp! All wall surfaces and millwork are looking fresh with the new paint job.

In addition to our typical open house party format, we’ll have a very special presentation. As mentioned in the most recent CSH post, the Age Explorer suit developed by BLUM will be making an appearance at the event. The suit was designed to simulate physical limitations, guiding the development of products for optimized usability and ergonomics. We’ll be conducting an on-site test run of our Dynamic Space kitchen during the open house, and a lucky guest will have a chance to gear up and check it out for themselves.

On each of our projects, longevity is a major factor in design and in construction. We believe in architecture for life. A home ought to be livable for a lifetime. And, wherever possible, the functions within ought to work seamlessly throughout one’s life. We’re confident that, by teaming with like-minded subs and vendors such as BLUM, we’ve been able to accomplish this.

Every open house event we host is a fantastic opportunity to gather our community of friends, neighbors, and collaborators involved in the project. The Case Study House, however, is one we’re especially excited to celebrate the completion of. It’s been a labor of love, and we’ve learned a ton. It’s time to party.
