Special Projects Division (BUILD’s cabinet and furniture shop) just finished up a handsome project that involves some cool details.

Kevin Eckert along with master craftsman David Hentzel of SPD worked closely with Peter Strang of Propellor Design Build who orchestrated the project along with complimentary finishes including countertops and tile.

The residential cabinet package includes a full kitchen along with two bathrooms. In the kitchen, a bank of large wall cabinets is balanced with a slimmer pantry system on the opposing wall. A generous cooking island sits between the wall banks and provides the new hub of the residence.

All cabinets were made of stained quarter-sawn Mahogany using standard SPD continuous stainless steel horizontal pulls along with fully-integrated hardwood vertical pulls.

The cabinet faces are organized to use continuous faces – so that the grain patterns match between separate panels. Door and drawer panels are edge-banded with 1/8” solid Mahogany. Blum door and drawer hardware is used throughout.

The SPD adjustable base detail allows for differences in existing floors to be resolved within the toe-kick. The entire cabinet package is thereby set onto a level platform ensuring flat surfaces. Here’s the detail:

It’s always rewarding to complete a cabinet package for homeowners who live clean, organized lives. This cabinet package allows for a tidy, well-arranged kitchen and the owners have done a beautiful job putting it to work.

Small cabinet shop seem like the way to go. Low overhead and attention to detail. My two cents…

not too shabby! what was the time on this, conception to completion? two thoguhts…
1. the metal pulls – are these custom? if so, have you guys thought of using a return mortised into the interior side so that the screws aren’t on the top of the drawer?
2. countertop thickness: the 1/2″ & 3/4″ countertops tend to look a little on the lean side unless using steel, do you guys ever beef up the edge?

Many thanks to Kevin and David with SPD! We absolutely LOVE the craftsmanship and detail they put into this cabinet package. The cabinets and drawers have been a true pleasure to use day to day and the quality is felt throughout. Many friends have complimented the style, fit & finish and ease of use in our kitchen. SPD delivered a top notch product, no regrets!
Also huge kudos to Peter Strang with Propellor and Travis Colburn with Modern Organic Design Architechture on our whole remodel. They designed this layout and we are truely thrilled with the results!

That’s a clever detail for the base – great of you guys to share it with the rest of us.

How do you get in there to screw that wood screw into the wall below the box base?

The project looks great! That is a great idea for the base. Do you have any pictures of the bathrooms? Thanks for the work Peter, and congrats and a project well done.

@ts – the horizontal plywood are slats (rather than a full board) spaced every 24″ – allowing access to the fastener. We should add a note to the detail about that.
@ Zachary – we do have some bathroom shots and we’ll get a few up.
